At Plant & Food Research we conduct research that adds value to fruit, vegetable, crop and food products. Our science and commercialisation supports the production of high quality produce and novel functional foods that earn a premium in international markets. Our Viticulture & Oenology Group, in partnership with the NZ Winegrowers Research Centre Ltd (NZWRC), is going through an exciting growth phase to provide New Zealand with world-leading research for grape and wine production.

Based at the 20-strong Marlborough Research Centre, the Group is seeking a Viticulture Scientist to undertake research with a focus on the utilisation of digital technologies to study vine development and optimise vineyard management. You’ll be responsible for initiating and leading original viticulture research programmes that integrate plant physiology knowledge with industry led, outcome-focused research. Effectively communicating the results to internal and external stakeholders will see you foster relationships with commercial clients, develop collaborations with both New Zealand and overseas scientists and seek funding for new research projects.

Job Requirements
You will have a PhD in plant sciences, horticulture or plant physiology, together with proven experience in viticultural research and/or viticultural management of vineyards. Experience in experimental design methodologies including spatial and/or GIS studies and the use of digital technologies in primary production and computer programming for data processing and statistical analysis are also essential. Your effective project management, communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to enhance Plant and Food Research’s reputation for scientific excellence within the wine industry.
