There’s no better place to study viticulture and wine making than in Marlborough, the heart of wine country.
The Marlborough region is at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry, producing 77 percent of the country’s grape harvest with over 168 wine producers and more than 568 independent growers.
The region has an international reputation for the quality and flavours of its wines, based on the district’s unique characteristics for cool climate viticulture. The greatest benefit of studying at NMIT’s Marlborough campus is our close links with local wine and viticulture industries. You’ll have the opportunity to gain on the job experience at local wineries and vineyards through work placements and part-time employment while studying. You’ll also go out on field trips to see and experience all aspects and stages of wine production. Winemakers, viticulturists and industry specialists also come in as guest speakers. As a student at NMIT, you’ll have the chance to grow your own grapes, make your own wine, practice wine analysis and develop wine sensory analysis skills.

The NMIT winery and laboratories are situated within the Marlborough Wine Research Centre, established with support from local and national wine and viticulture industries. NMIT students are fortunate to rub shoulders with scientists conducting cutting edge research in the area of viticulture and wine and some of the researchers lecture part time.

BACHELOR OF VITICULTURE AND WINEMAKING *

The Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Making will provide you with a degree level education in viticuture and wine making as practised in New Zealand and globally. It is a full scientific exploration of wine science and viticulture with a strong practical industry focus and electives to complement your career aspirations – operational, research or business. You will be learning from regional and national experts, within an environment that is actively engaged with both the industry and scientific communities. The programme applies a realistic approach to viticulture and wine making to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to work within this attractive industry. The Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking is suitable for students with a range of experience from high school graduates to mature students wishing to retrain or gain academic recognition in their current employment.

Would you like to create world class wines or manage a vineyard? In this hands-on, practical programme you’ll gain substantial theoretical understanding and a broad range of technical and practical skills related to grape growing and wine production. You’ll also complete one vintage of practical industry work experience. The qualification can either be completed on campus or online.

CERTIFICATE IN VINEYARD PRACTICE
Level 3 | Location Online learning | Starts February, July, October | Length Part time 2 years
Established in response to industry demand for skilled vineyard workers, this programme covers all aspects of grape growing including pruning, canopy management, pest and disease control and more. You’ll gain the practical skills required to work in vineyards of New Zealand, Australia or further afield. Theory is studied as a distance learning package but includes practical work components completed in a vineyard.

David Hayward has been involved in the Australian wine industry for around 25 years working in both small and medium sized wineries including his own boutique vineyard and winery in the Strathbogie Ranges. Having been a lecturer of Oenology at the University of Melbourne for 14 years, David was involved in wine programme development, coordination and delivery at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He’s also been a judge at wine shows such as the Victorian Wines Show, the Dookie Wine Show and Kyneton Wine. Describing himself as an “unashamed climate change refugee,” David made the move to New Zealand in 2014 to take up the role of Wine Tutor.
“I love the wines produced in cooler climates. They are restrained and elegant making them more suitable to accompany good food. New Zealand continues to evolve as a wine producing nation with some great opportunities especially with alternative varieties suited to cooler climates.”

Glen Kirkwood - Having grown up the Hunter Valley, Glen went on gained an associate degree in applied science majoring in viticulture, from Charles Sturt University, NSW. Since then he has amassed more than 20-years’ experience in viticulture and vineyard management across New Zealand and Australia.
Dion Mundy - With over 15 years experience in viticulture research, Dion is a valuable asset to NMIT Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production students. Dion is a respected expert on grapevine diseases and he spends much of his time researching how to keep New Zealand’s grapevines healthy, as part of his job as scientist for Plant and Food Research in Marlborough.
