Mission Hill Family Estate Winery overlooks the 90 mile long Okanagan Valley, a 35 minute flight across the Cascade Mountains from Vancouver. The stunning region with virtually no rainfall is an arid desert with great diversity and micro-climates. The Okanagan Valley is a relatively new grape growing region producing approximately 25,000 tons of grapes. It is characterised by very low rainfall, hot summers and cold winters. The valley produces a range of different varieties among which are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
The Winemaker is responsible for day to day winemaking activities on specific wines and varieties, ensuring the highest quality, image and productivity in support of Mission Hills strategic goals.
Direct and oversee day to day winemaking activities for specific company brands in our British Columbia and imported wine brands portfolios. Direct cellar work and laboratory analysis through written cellar work orders, ensuring the best quality practices and work scheduling practices. Assist the VP, Winemaking and Viticulture in the development and research of new winemaking procedures, techniques and capital projects that will augment Mission Hills product quality and processing efficiency. Visit vineyards at key times during the growing season to track progress and gain an understanding of British Columbia viticulture and premium grape growing techniques. Participate as a member of the winemaking team in all blending and tasting panels for all wines produced at the winery. Monitor bulk wine inventory and ensure quality is maintained through routine cellar operations, temperature controls, analytical testing and regular tastings. Represent company wine brands at promotional events and media related activities, in support of the marketing and sales teams.
Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Enology or related Science or equivalent education and experience. At least 5 years industry winemaking experience in a quality focused environment. Computer literate especially in Microsoft Word, Excel and use of winemaking database programs for tracking wine analysis and blend history. Possess wine tasting skills and have an interest in the production and consuming of wine. Experience with laboratory analysis techniques and use of IR analysis equipment would be an advantage.
