949 Services (Trading as Madrez Wine Services) is a 22 year old leading contract winemaking business in Orange NSW Australia whose focus is on delivering high quality winemaking for a variety of well-known and high profile clients across Orange, Mudgee, Hill Tops and the Central Ranges including (but not limited to) Nashdale Lane Wines, Cooks Lot, Burnbrae Wines and Ballina Clash. Orange is currently one of the most exciting wine regions in the country. The focus is on producing high quality white, red, rose, sparkling and cider from premium hand picked fruit, ensuring the expression of varietal character and retention of cool climate acidity.
An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Winemaker / Winemaker to join our team. We require a passionate focussed individual to assist with managing all aspects of winery operations. This role is an opportunity to be involved in a progressive and expanding business. The successful applicant will have hands on winemaking experience. You will work alongside the owner and clients and be responsible for winemaking and logistics. You will work with a diverse range of grape varieties and have the opportunity to make a wide variety of wines and wine styles, as well as cider.
The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial in approach and have a passion for making small batch cool climate wines. Working closely with the Winemaker / Owner Manager to ensure wine quality standards and customer demands are met, this role is responsible and accountable for efficiencies and overall performance of the winery, cellar and laboratory activities.

• Managing all aspects of the winemaking process including press, crush, fermentation, stabilising and ready for bottling to ensure wines meet critical points, standards, specifications and quality parameters.
• Monitoring ullages and conditions of wines and taking corrective action to minimise ullage and maintain quality.
• Showing flexibility around changing wine condition and cellar/winery capabilities, reporting to Winemaker / Owner Manager regularly.
• Oversee the planning and implementation of all Cellar & Laboratory activities on a daily basis.
• Drive the daily ferment testing and record keeping during vintage .
• Monitor the status of all product blends produced on site, ensuring all product requirements are met.
• Monitor Laboratory analysis of all wines and ensure quality control requirements are met.
• Ensure all wines are stored and maintained according to quality control requirements and report all occurrences outside normal parameters involving quality.
• Program and monitor barrel and tank topping program.
• Represent the Company in regional Winemaking groups and associations as appropriate and beneficial to the Company.
• Managing the cellar to the highest standards.
• Take an active role in the continuous improvement of winery and processes.
• Plan workloads for the cellar outside of, and during vintage.
• Responsibility for implementing the winery health and safety management system as an integral part of day-to- day operations.
• Ability to host customer-facing tastings, visits, and events when required.
• Assist in our continuing journey for Sustainable Winemaking practices.
Job Requirements
• Tertiary qualifications in Winemaking or Oenology.
• 3-5 years Winemaker experience.
• Experience in day-to-day winery management
• Well developed people and interpersonal skills and good communication skills, both oral and written.
• Working in a small and flexible team, there will be a requirement to work shift work and weekends for the period of Vintage annually (February until late April) is essential.
• Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail is a must.
• You will be someone with a passion for wine, be reliable, self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic.
• Have a ‘hands on’ approach to the winemaking process.
• You will possess a demonstrated understanding of Wine Quality Management systems
• Leadership, problem solving and decision-making ability.
• Planning and organisation skills.
• Experience in producing a range of premium wine styles.
• Knowledge of winery effluent and refrigeration systems would be advantageous.
• Current driver’s license.
• Forklift licence would be advantageous.
