About the Winery: Kayena Winery is in Tasmania, north of Launceston in the renowned Tamar Valley and is a leading producer of quality cool climate Tasmanian wines. We are passionate about making great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for table wine or Methode Champenoise sparkling. The winery draws grapes from a wide range of sites throughout Tasmania, processing approximately 3,000 tonnes annually.
Opportunities Available: Kayena winery are looking for experienced vintage staff for the 2025 vintage. We are seeking passionate and motivated vintage cellar hands, a Night Supervisor and a Laboratory Supervisor, commencing end of February for a period of up to 6 - 10 weeks (depending upon the length of the season).
Job Requirements
Cellar Hands
Duties will include working with pumps and machinery plus a range of other winery duties including grape receival and processing, racking, additions, ferment management, blending and barrel work.
Winery experience preferred but all on-the-job training will be provided,. Good physical health is essential, as much of the work is physically demanding, requiring an excellent level of fitness. A mechanical aptitude, good hygiene, housekeeping and safety is also essential. There is a requirement to perform forklift duties (you won't be driving a forklift for the entire shift). Preference will be given to applicants who possess a License to Perform High Risk Work (forklift license) and have at least 12 months forklift driving experience.
Night Supervisor
Reporting to the Winemaker, your primary responsibility will be to provide motivation and supervision to vintage staff and to ensure work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner.
The Vintage Night Supervisor will work closely with winemakers to implement a highly varied range of winemaking protocols. Drawing on wine production experience and knowledge (fruit quality assessment, calculation of additions etc), the Vintage Night Supervisor can make important contributions to product quality.
We seek a pro-active individual who demonstrates strong organisational skills and the ability to lead and motivate others in a busy winery environment. You will possess excellent communication skills, a high level of self-motivation and be committed to a high standard of wine quality. Experience working with pumps and other winery equipment is essential as well as good physical health, as much of the work is physically demanding, requiring an excellent level of fitness. Preference will be given to applicants who possess a License to Perform High Risk Work (forklift license) and have at least 12 months forklift driving experience.
Laboratory Supervisor
Your primary responsibility will be to carry out all chemical, physical, and microbiological testing, supervise casual Laboratory Technician and perform trial work as required by the winery.
You must enjoy working in a hands-on capacity and have a solid knowledge of laboratory quality systems, strong attention to detail and can demonstrate previous supervisory experience in similar roles.
Prior cellar and/or laboratory experience is essential, and specific job training is provided for individuals.
Requirements & Applications
All applicants must have Australian citizenship/residency or a valid Australian work visa until at least May 2025.
If successful, you will commence end of February and will work in our winery for a period of up to 10 – 12 weeks (depending upon the length of the season). There is an expectation that you will make yourself available for the whole of this period.
Hours of work will vary depending on the seasonal variabilities, but our vintage team will need to be available for day, afternoon & night shifts, as well as weekends as needed. Penalty rates will apply.
